Labour’s Transport Spokesperson Cllr Jack Owen has called for action from Suffolk County Council after the Orwell Bridge was closed to traffic for the FOURTH time this year.
The closure left Ipswich gridlocked this morning after the bridge was closed just after midnight due to high winds. The ensuing traffic chaos in the town comes despite many people not travelling into work and highlights the need for better planning when the bridge does close.
Labour say that, given the number of times the bridge has closed this year, there is no excuse for Cllr Jane Storey not to be on top of the situation and intensifies the need for a Northern Bypass solution to this problem.
Cllr Owen said; “The closure of the Orwell Bridge should not lead to such gridlock and traffic problems. The Tory-led administration at Suffolk County Council has had plenty of opportunities to plan for and mitigate the traffic problems that the bridge closure consistently has. This, coupled with the state of our potholed riddled roads, shows that the Tories have lost their grip on the situation – this cannot be allowed to continue.”
Cllr Bill Quinton, Labour’s Ipswich Spokesperson said; “It is obvious that the simple solution to this fiasco is for the county council to put its weight fully behind the Northern Bypass scheme. The Northern Bypass would ensure the traffic moves more freely and would have the added benefit of unlocking areas of land to help invigorate the Ipswich economy which would help the whole of Suffolk.”
